🌹What do we mean by critical thinking (i.e., Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS)) ?
Critical thinking is the intellectually
disciplined process of actively and skillfully... conceptualizing, applying,
analyzing, synthesizing, and/or evaluating information...gathered from, or
generated by,...observation,experience, reflection, reasoning, or
communication,...as a guide to belief or action.

Critical thinking is the ability to analyze information objectively...and make a reasoned judgement. It involves the evaluation of sources such as data, facts and research findings.
🌹Five important aspects of
critical thinking skills: (i) observation, (ii) analysis, (iii) inference, (iv) communication and (v) creativity.
(i) Observation...means the ability to recall facts and basic concepts,...explain ideas or concepts...and apply solutions to problems.
(ii) Analysis...means the gathering, understanding and interpreting of data and other information and draw connections among ideas.
(iii) Inference....is done by drawing conclusions or form an opinion based on relevant data, information and personal knowledge and experience.
(iv) Communication...means sharing and receiving information with others verbally and in writing.
(v) Creativity...means the ability to produce or discover...new work or...original work or... enhanced work that has been done before.
🌹Why are critical thinking skills
important?
For students, instead of a complete dependence on classroom learning and teachers for a complete guidance and instructions...critical thinking allows students to become more self-reliant and independent learners.
Critical thinking skills also help the students to evaluate their areas of strength & flaws and enable them to solve problems more effectively.
Good critical thinkers can draw reasonable conclusions from a set
of information...and discriminate between useful and less useful information...to solve problems or make decisions.
Critical thinking skills also involve creativity and innovation.
To think critically...we need to
be able to set aside any assumptions or judgements beforehand...and just merely analyze the information we possess
or receive.
We need to be objective, evaluating ideas without
bias...in other words we need to have open-mindedness quality.
By merely having knowledge or information...or using the latest technology ( i.e., Computer Algebra System technology)...is not good enough. We need to know how to utilize the technology in the best possible way...to produce knowledge or information...to make a reasoned judgement to enhance critical thinking skills.
